Duncan and Mdantsane Township Tours

Our first weekend in East London, our clients volunteered to take us on a tour of the townships close by to East London. In South Africa, the term township usually refers to the (often underdeveloped) urban living areas that, under Apartheid, were reserved for non-whites. Townships were usually built on the periphery of towns and cities. Today townships are often viewed as just one of the many suburbs that an urban area might have.

We spent the day in the townships of Duncan and Mdantsane.  Mdantsane is the second largest township in all of South Africa, after Soweto in Jo’burg. The current population in Mdantsane is estimated at 1.6 million people.

We drove through the township and stopped frequently to hear the guide tell us stories about the township and to meet locals in the area. Above are some pictures of the trip.
